I’ve just spent 20 minutes trying to think of a better headline but its with a heavy heart (and a stinking hangover) that I announce to our thousands of subscribers (well 244 and counting read last weeks post) that the 1sts lost our Grand Final to St Bernard’s on the weekend. The 1sts are in a good position after 2 days (well 38 over’s actually) of their grand final being played at Crofts Reserve Altona North against St Bernard’s.

Saturdays play was completely lost due to rain that fell late in the week and on Saturday. Sunday looked better when we arrived but a delayed start was inevitable whilst the surrounds dried up. When the toss was completed Danny continued the CY’s impressive record of coin tossing in grand finals (we have now lost the last 8 in a row, why do I know crap like this) and the St Bernard’s captain had little hesitation in asking us to bat. After 5 years in the VTCA the 1sts have made their way into the premier grade, but only by the smallest of margins.

On a wicket that was always going to do a bit Danny won the toss and sent Hoppers in to bat.  A new opening bowling combination of Danny and Hagg’s (much to Mozza’s disgust) led us away and in  Hagg’s 2nd over he had their opener Carrington out somehow (can’t remember and Hoppers haven’t put their side of results vault in yet).  Read the rest of this entry »

The 1sts had excellent outright victory over the previously undefeated St Bernard’s on the weekend.  Resuming at 2/27 St Bernard’s were quickly in trouble when Hagg’s in his 3rd over for the day picked up both overnight batsmen, the first caught behind by Kel, the second well caught by Yeah Yeah in 3rd slip.  Not to be outdone the Mozz followed up straight away having Garth caught at silly mid off by Slugga and when Hagg’s trapped the next bat LBW a few over’s later St Bernard’s had slumped to 6/38, still trailing by 47 and a few of our boys began planning an early finish (and a late night) to entertain themselves for the rest of the day.  But St Bernard’s boy’s showed why they had got to top position with a gritty 52 run partnership which was ended when Viv with a change of pace (any less it may have stopped) drew a false shot and Spinella was well caught by Slugga in the covers. This Saturday afternoon we will be holding a Family Day at the Fearon.

Whilst supporting our Firsts XI who are at home vs Hoppers Crossing, the Family day will start at 3pm running through until after the game. There will be a couple of Bouncy castles and a Mini Golf set up for the kids, and a BBQ will be run. The aim being to give all familys a chance to get down at some point during the afternoon and early evening. There is no charge for what is aimed at saying a thank you for all the support that many supporters have given all 4 senior and 4 junior teams over the season.

Good luck goes out to both our 1s and 2s who made the finals this coming weekend.
